Japan, Canada Launch Economic Security Dialogue
Sanae Takaichi made the remarks during a joint press briefing in Tokyo following talks with her Canadian counterpart Mark Carney.
"We will seize every opportunity to advance concrete cooperation, including in cutting-edge technology fields such as AI and quantum technologies, as well as efforts to make critical mineral supply chains more resilient," Takaichi said.
Reports indicate that the two leaders reaffirmed a bilateral relationship dating back to 1928, with annual trade valued at nearly $40 billion. They also agreed to expand military cooperation, coordinate on defense procurement—including dual-use technologies—and collaborate on emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, aerospace, and space communications.
The talks included discussions on three bilateral Memorandums of Cooperation designed to strengthen collaboration in crisis response, enforcement against illegal fishing, and coordination between the Canadian Coast Guard and the Japan Coast Guard.
The prime ministers highlighted additional opportunities for trade expansion and joint initiatives in energy sectors, including LNG, LPG, nuclear technologies, hydrogen, and carbon capture.
